Back in 1995, immediately after the run of MSCL ended, Sherry Mann helped to compile a mix tape of some of the songs used on the show and not included on the official soundtrack. It included some sound clips from the episodes available to Sherry, and bonus tracks that could just fit into the halls of Liberty. Over time, the original tapes have been circulated and copied and dubbed until they're wearing out.

In 1999, sometime listie Gopher made all nineteen episodes available on CD to a few of his friends. With no prospect of official digital release at the time, this was destined to be the definitive electronic copy of MSCL.

In 2002, my parents bought a new car, but father complained loudly because it didn't have a tape player fitted as standard. It set me wondering: who else might appreciate a digitised version of the soundtrack?

In compiling this double CD set, I've tried to remain true to Sherry's original vision. All the audio clips from the show have been duplicated in this work, and I've added some extra items from the episodes that weren't available in the original version. There are also eight new tracks, mostly created since MSCL aired, and perhaps inspired by Winnie Holzman's timeless creation.

Jawbox performed Cruel Swing in episode 2, but I wasn't able to track down a copy of this song. I did find a tune of theirs that fits right in to the corridors.
I decided not to include Shelly Fabares' Johnny Angel, from the Hallowe'en episode; or Live's I Alone, from The Weekend. Neither song is at all apparent on the show soundtrack. The only other canonical song neither here nor on the official soundtrack is Down With A Rod, performed by the Juliana Hatfield Trio at Rayanne's party; here, Juliana already has two far more fitting songs.

The director's cut... there's very little Sharon on this work, mainly because she didn't talk in soundbites, or speak in the crucial scenes. Similarly, I've avoided the Hallie / Graham relationship, as this was more visual than audio. Scenes that just missed the final cut: Angela and Sharon making up in Strangers In The House; the closing scene to that episode; reading "Our Town"; and Graham chiding Brian at the end of Father Figures. Songs that didn't quite make it: Ash Angel Interceptor; the Starlight mix of DJ Sammy's Heaven; and Vanessa Carlton's Ordinary Day.
