It was the Third Round (quarter-finals) of the Scottish League Cup, followed almost inevitably by the Second Round draw. How difficult can it be to draw the semis? If you're Alex Fergusson, presiding officer at the Scottish Parliament, it's impossible. Mr. Fergusson couldn't tell the difference between ball 2 and ball 3, and the Scottish League had to revise the draw. Genius.

Changes are against standings on 28 September. Blackburn may have left the UEFA Cup, but that was against a side that hadn't been admitted to the rankings; their strong domestic form puts them fourth. Liverpool Stadiennes have been suffering from their inability to win games in Europe, even against very moderate opposition. Manchester City continues its strong start, but Tottenham's slide continues. At the bottom, Derby looked doomed last month, and Wigan may well have joined them.

Again, changes are from 28 September. Bayern are unbeaten in all competitions this year, a phenomenon that makes it difficult for us to work out just how strong they really are. Stuttgart's title defence appears to be over, they've lost a lot of ground already. Karlsruhr started well, but has rather fallen away this month; Hansa Rostock has pushed its way up well. Wolfsburg is challenging for European action; Bochum and Hertha Berlin may be scrapping for the final relegation place.
