The Spanish Inquisition
Back to domestic football, then, and some upsets:

34 Lyon - BORDEAUX 0:1
33 CHARLTON - Wigan 1:0
33 Newcastle - MAN CITY 0:1
33 Lens - PARIS ST GERMAIN 1:2
33 Regianna - SIENA 0:1
33 Wolves - SOUTHAMPTON 0:6 (SIX)
33 WEST HAM - Middlesbrough 2:0
32 BAYERN MUNICH - Schalke 04 2:0

31 SOCIEDAD - Levante 1:0
30 IPSWICH - Plymouth 3:0
19 DUNDEE UTD - Celtic 1:1
15 Rangers - INVERNESS CT 1:1
The French match there was the League Cup final, and Bordeaux has booked a place in Europe next season. They'll join Lyon. It's a surprise to see Bayern's victory as an upset, but defeating the league leaders must surely qualify. Leeds get the shock of the week, easing their relegation worries while knocking Preston's play-off push.

Bayern was already on the back foot - their first-choice goalie was banned for a match after protesting when UEFA botched the taking of his drugs sample in the achtelfinal match last month - and went 2:1 down when the referee was fooled by a shameful dive. Some sort of justice was served with a squeaker in the dying seconds of injury time. It will be a deep shame if Bayern goes out through situations created solely by the sheer incompetence of UEFA's officials.

More shocking refereeing here - Espanyol only takes the lead courtesy of another blatantly wrong penalty appeal. And, in the rather wonderful AZ - Werder match, the referee tried to send off a player for two bookable offences even though he'd only booked him once. Maybe this ref should get together with Graham Poll and write Counting For Beginners...
Praise, incidentally, to ITV, who showed two-and-a-half of last night's UEFA Cup quarter-finals live. Leverkusen live at 6pm on ITV4, Sevilla at 7.45 on the main ITV, AZ on a twelve-minute delay from 7.57 on ITV4 joining the match live for the second half, and Espanyol on tape from 10pm. It's only a shame that there's no television coverage of the Wednesday matches in the European League, as we'd rather like to see how the Milan-Munich match turns out. No such special treatment next week, sadly, just Spurs on ITV and one of the others on ITV4.

Does no-one want to win this league, or something? Schalke and Stuttgart are stumbling, Werder have their hands full in Europe, allowing Bayern and Bayer to come up on the rails. Note that Hamburg, relegation candidates six weeks ago, are now pushing for some sort of European entry; Hertha has gone the other way.
Our next update will be published at some point in the week-end of 14-15 April, and will cover to-morrow's matches as well as the UEFA and other mid-week games.

Cricket update
The principle of the Super Eight is simple - it's a round-robin between the eight best sides in the world. This should be simple, because there are four really good sides (Aus, SA, NZ, SL), four very decent sides (Eng, WI, Pak, Ind), and just a couple of sides who can pull off an upset win from time to time (Ban, Ken). The problem with the current run of matches is that Bangladesh's upset win came against India, and Pakistan somehow managed to lose to Ireland. (Ireland!) Rather than having a great match every day for the best part of a month, the World Cup is left with a Bangladesh team that's probably not going to progress, and an Irish side that is clearly learning (and learning well) as it goes on.
Results in the World Cup.
- Australia 322/6 beat West Indies 219 by 103 runs. Australia 6, WI 0. Australia should now have the four wins to reach the semis - we can't see them lose to Ireland or Bangladesh.
- Sri Lanka 209 lost to South Africa 212/9 by one wicket with 10 balls remaining. SA 5, SL 1.
- West Indies 177 lost to New Zealand 179/3 by 7 wickets with 64 balls remaining. NZ 6, WI 0. NZ should also make the four wins now.
- England 266/7 beat Ireland 218 by 48 runs.
- Bangladesh 104/6 lost to Australia 106/0 by 10 wickets with 49 balls remaining. Aus 6, Ban 0. Tel criticises the piss-poor preparation - overnight rain reduced this match to 22 overs-a-side.
- Sri Lanka 303/5 beat West Indies 190 by 113 runs. SL 6, WI 0. Second win for the Sri Lankans, but the first came against Bangladesh.
- Bangladesh 174 lost to New Zealand 178/1 by 9 wickets with 124 balls remaining. Ban 0, NZ 6.
- South Africa 165-3 bt Ireland 152-8 by seven wickets (Duckworth Lewis target: 160 runs from 35 overs)
- Sri Lanka 235 beat England 233-8 by two runs. SL 5, Eng 1. This was the second win against serious competition for Sri Lanka, putting them in position for the last four.
The table
AUS 1182 153.3
NZ 1150 155.9
SL 1122 140.3

PAK 921 179.9
WI 920 145.5

Looks like we know three of the semi-finalists already, to be joined by the winners of the SA-Eng-WI contest.
Next scheduled update on the cricket is scheduled for 23 April, after the conclusion of the Super Eight.

The week-end's action
The halbenfinals of the English FA Cup saw Manchester Buccaneers beat Watford 4:1, and Chelsea beat Blackburn 1:0 in extra time after a 1:1 draw. The results mean that both cup finalists are playing in the European League, so 7th place in the league will suffice for UEFA Cup football. Celtic are through to the Scottish Cup final, after beating St. Johnstone 2:1; Dunfermline and Hibs will replay for the UEFA Cup berth after a 0:0 draw. Many of Europe's cups are at the semi-final stage this week, including fourth-division Montceaux's challenge for the French final.

Yes, it's time to unveil the draw for the Intertoto Cup. We've used national placeholders throughout, as that's how the draw was made.

No Scottish side has bothered to enter this year, so Romania get a second berth in the tournament. No Norwegian side has entered, preferring their domestic leagues, allowing Andorra to slip in through the side door again.
We know eight sides already: Sweden will be represented by Hammarby; Finland by the entertainingly-named Honka Espoo, Latvia by Dinaburg Daugavpils, Lithuania by Vetra Vilnius, Iceland by Value Reykjavik, Ireland by Cork City, Kazakhstan by Tobol Kustanai, and the Faroes by KI Klaksvik. Five other sides will enter, unless they win their domestic cups, Russia's entry will be ZENIT ST PETERSBURG, Belarus will be represented by Shakhtior Saligorsk, Armenia by Mika Ashtarak (bad news for those who thought he was playing at Glastonbury), Estonia by Flora Tallinn, and Andorra by Santa Coloma.

European FACT!
It's possible to use history to work out the probability of progression based on first-leg results. Here's a list of first-leg results up to the end of the 2004 season, played a minimum of 25 times:

3-3 7- 22 (29) 24% / 76%
1-1 116-408 (524) 22% / 78%
2-2 35-164 (199) 18% / 82%
0-1 36-350 (386) 9% / 91%
1-2 8-223 (231) 3% / 97%

From this, we can tell that a two-goal win in the first leg favours the winners. Obviously. A single goal away win is a massive advantage; a single goal home win generally favours the visitors, though only slightly. Draws favour the visitors, and we're a bit surprised that only 30% of home sides who draw their first leg 0:0 go on to win the tie.
