Des, Justin, Ed, and Shaun - The Snow In The Summer or So-So

12 September 2017
Song of the summer 2017

Time to push the buttons and work out Northern Europe's Hit Song of Summer 2017.

This feature is inspired by the North American obsession with naming the song of the summer. Sean Ross lampoons the mania, variously naming Praying, Despacito, There's nothing holdin' me back, Stay, Body like a back road, Feels, and Feel it still to various categories.

Our methodology is based on hard fact, not opinion. We take positions in sales charts north of the Alps and between the Urals and the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. We add in airplay where sales are not available, grudgingly add in streaming where it's essential.

We add up all these points for each week, weighting by the the size of the "market". And then we use the summer - we multiply by the average temperature here, less 10°C. The hottest week in June had a multiple of 12, three weeks in July multiplied by 9. And, because we start counting at the start of the year, hits in February are multiplied by MINUS 9.

This really hurts Shape of you: number one for most of the winter and spring, it had a huge disadvantage to overcome. Ed did manage to get this single into a positive score, and it's number 83 for the summer. If we only counted weeks with the temp above 10°C, it would be number 1.

Here's the top 20, in bits.

20 slow hands - niall horan
19 thunder - imagine dragons
18 sign of the times - harry styles
17 súbeme la radio - enrique iglesias
16 your song - rita ora

Imagine Dragons had two hit singles this summer, Believer was number 23. Two from former One Directioners. Enrique's score includes the Matt Terry remix inflicted on listeners in this territory. Rita Ora's comeback was a late riser in the summer, seems to have been our local airplay fave in August.

15 strip that down f/quavo - liam payne
14 i'm the one f/bieber/quavo... - dj khaled
13 galway girl - ed sheeran
12 symphony f/zara larsson - clean bandit
11 wild thoughts - dj khaled f/rihanna/b. tiller

Two from DJ Khaled, two from Quavo. Ed Sheeran's hit doesn't have the drag from the depth of winter, and Clean Bandit had a strong performance in early summer.

10 despacito f/justin bieber - luis fonsi & daddy yankee
09 something just like this - the chainsmokers & coldplay
08 ok f/james blunt - robin schulz
07 feels f/pharrell/katy/big sean - calvin harris
06 unforgettable f/swae lee - french montana

Second entry from Bieber. His version of Despacito charted separately in Finland, so we have to split it from the Bieber-free version. Chainsmokers and Coldplay started in early March, after winter was over, and remained hugely popular until July.

Robin Schulz hasn't been promoted in this territory, perhaps because of the "and James Blunt" bit. Shame, it's a really good song. Calvin Harris had an excellent release schedule, coming out in mid-June to pick up the big points.

05 attention - charlie puth
04 there's nothing holdin' me... - shawn mendes
03 2u f/justin bieber - david guetta

Charlie Puth did one better than Calvin Harris, pushing out his single at the end of April. It's remained in or around the top ten all summer, never quite hitting the A-list, but adding up lots of points each week. Shawn Mendes spent most of the summer at the weekly number 4, first below then above Guetta and Bieber. Yeah, three Justin Bieber songs in the top fourteen.

02 mama f/william singe - jonas blue

Remarkably close for places 4, 3, 2 - less than 3% covers the three tunes. For our money, this was the inescapable song of the summer. Bright and bubbly, but completely vapid.

01 despacito - luis fonsi / daddy yankee

But this was the best-charted song of the year, the Latin-tinged love song with something for everyone. Didn't do much for us, but it won by about 14% over the next three.

If you must combine the two Despacitae, then it wins by a mile, and Miley Cyrus's Malibu ranks at 21. That's another of our faves, and it might just be the summer song to come out of 2017.
