Iceland

Based on the airplay charts of Mix 93.7, the only Icelandic radio station to put its playlist on the web.

It's been a great year for the reggae-lite of Markoolio, the two best-charting singles. Only two non-Swedish singles in the top ten, and the Eurovision entry makes position 8. Most successful UK talent was Grace Kelly at 34.

Finland

Based on the national top 20 sales chart; this changed format in October to include downloads, and has become much less volatile since.

The change in compilation method came just in time for the new Nightwish album, and the lead single took the top spot by a country mile; an album track makes number 18. We have to go down to Valo and Avelon at number 5 to find a record that hasn't scored most of its points from the last three months. Those two were international hits, as was Enrique at 11, Rihanna at 13, and Prydz at 14, the latter the highest-scoring Brit. At number 22 came Dancing lasha tumbai, the Ukraine's entry to Eurovision. Didn't win the contest, but won the battle in the host nation - Hanna failed to gain a physical release.

Estonia

National airplay top 20s are crunched and compiled to form the Eesti 20; we cream off the best.

Something of a surprise number one, mostly because we had forgotten the dominance this song had in the early part of the year. Three Estonian acts in the top ten, rounded out by two Brits. It's one of the few places where Mika's biggest hit wasn't his tribute to Simon Cowell; it's 22 for the year.

We're not sure if each station has a legal minimum of Latcon to play, or if one of the big guns only plays Latvian tunes. Dons the biggest of eight Latvian acts, and the other bases - Enrique, Nelly, Mika, Rihanna - are all ticked.

Lithuania

Based on the playlist of M-1, the leading radio station in Vilnus. We've excluded two songs by the station's jockeys.

A very commercial station, surviving on a diet of Mika (four in the top 20!) Nelly Furtado (four in the top 32, plus that Timberland duet) and other familiar stuff. Andrius Mamontovas is the only domestic talent in the top 20, though three Lithuanians are in the next five places. Dima Bilan might be remembered as Russia's entry to Eurovision 2006, returning with a groovy number. As in, it's a groove and little more.

Poland

The playlists of Radio Troika here; it's an adult rock-leaning station, and we would like to swap for a national airplay chart.

Czech radio is rather slow on the uptake, and staid in its approach; there have been just eight number one singles this year, and Chinaski is the only song in the top 20 released after July.

In terms of raw score, Ötzi's success represents a top-9 hit each week for the entire year, almost as dominant as Trine Dryholm in Denmark. It's racked up almost twice as many points as the nearest competitors, and the Austrian outsells four Germans in the top ten, topped by Ich + Ich. Eurovision entry Roger Cicero ranks number 101 here, his success lay elsewhere.

Netherlands

Local talent fills the top four places, and a few more going down the list. Hazes and Joling's song would have been perfect for a long hot summer; the song that was applicable for the one the Dutch got was some places lower. Biggest foreign hit was from a Mika song that'll be re-released in the UK for 2008. Eurovision entry Edsilia Rombley managed a week at 11, putting her in a tie for 146th.

Another runaway winner, Fixkes are a local dance/rap band. Milow is another local act, while Mega Mindy is only beaten by Mika in the most successful cartoon character stakes.

Though Luxembourg takes influences from France, the bigger push comes from Germany, where Marques, Groenemeyer, Funky P and Die Arzte have been successful, and Cicero was the Eurovision entrant. Though Pink has the year's success story, Mika puts three into the top 6, a remarkable achievement. Granny's Favouritz haven't charted outside Luxembourg, and we assume they count as local talent.

France

The last hold-out for physical singles; they still make up 70% of the market, though IFOP is expected to introduce a download element during 2008. We've considered the top 20.

They do like their shouty rap in France, making positions 1, 3, 5, and others down the list. Sportsmen have position 6 (former tennis player) and 11 (tie-in with rugby world cup); number 17 really did feature some clucking hens. Umbrella wasn't released until August, and makes 31 for the year; Enrique Iglesias is not marketed in France.

UK

A complex formula considers the entire top 40 of the sales chart; apart from the first week of the year, all downloads are included. Last chart used for this computation was the one published on 21 December.

The year's best-seller from Lewis is only number 19 in the countback, such are the perils of cramming huge numbers of sales into small numbers of weeks. Mika is the only domestic act beating a path into the top 8; Take That put three into the top 30 but nothing into the top 20, as they did in the 1994 sales chart. Eurovision hopelesses Scooch achieved a level of success they didn't deserve, placing 129th for the year.

Ireland

We're never sure where the joke in Ireland lies; why else would the fourth most-charted song of the year - ahead of Mika, for goodness' sake! - be an oldie first released in 1982? It's no surprise that we got thoroughly bored of that Fray song, hearing it three times a week for half the year was too much. No such problem for the other songs in the top ten, still fresh. Surprised to find that Linkin Park have popped up so often, the song barely registered on our radar.

So Mika ends the year as he began it, recording a comfortable victory over two Nelly Furtado songs. DJ Ötzi's domination of Germany translates into a top ten hit on our tabulation, and Valo/Avelon made 16 without ever becoming a hit in the UK. Though its big hit period was in 2006, Chasing cars sold solidly through the first half of the year, and ends at 26. Mika's also the biggest act of the year, beating Furtado and Avril, with Rihanna barely registering a third of his points.
